<p><em>In the multicultural societies of North America, tolerance and kindness towards others begins in the cradle. Karen has some wonderful and helpful suggestions on how to create an environment conducive to these attributes. Karen is the author of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Many-Languages-One-Classroom-Teaching/dp/0876590873/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262720497&amp;sr=8-1">&#8220;Many Languages, One Classroom: Teaching Dual and English Language Learners&#8221;</a> (2009) and has her Masters degree in education. <p>Children from different home languages are the fastest growing segment of the preschool population right now across the United States.  Chances are most English-speaking children will meet children who speak other languages in their neighborhoods, schools and childcare.  We can all benefit from fostering attitudes of tolerance and friendship.</p>
<p>Research tells us that all preschool children need to continue learning in their home languages even while they are also ready and able to learn a second language.  My hope is that all young children can learn to make wonderful social and emotional connections regardless of language, culture or ability.</p>
<p>I’ve included a lot of suggestions for helping diverse children communicate in my book, &#8220;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Many-Languages-One-Classroom-Teaching/dp/0876590873/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1262394630&amp;sr=1-1">Many Languages, One Classroom: Teaching Dual and English Language Learners</a>&#8221; (2009, <a href="http://www.gryphonhouse.com/">Gryphon House</a>). Here are some practical strategies that you can use to help young children get along with their diverse friends:</p>
<ul>
<li>Be a language learning role model:  Research shows there are cognitive advantages to becoming bilingual.  Even more important, this is a great way to show that you respect and enjoy diversity of languages and cultures and you are willing to give it a try.  Help children get beyond their shyness about trying to pronounce unfamiliar words.  And, above all, learn to properly pronounce every child’s name because it is an extension of their identity!</li>
<li>Narrate children’s play:  This helps bridge the communication gap by giving the English speaking children clues about how they can understand their new friend and by providing new vocabulary and understanding for the English language learner.  You might say, “Oh, Tomika is reaching for the blue play dough.  I think she is making a snake.  Ryan, you want to use some blue play dough too?  Let’s see how we can help Tomika understand how fun it is to share playdough with a friend!”</li>
<li>Teach everyone to use “motherese”: Even preschool-aged children can use these time-tested techniques to build basic language.  Remind all the children to speak slowly, to use gestures, expressions, props and pointing, to emphasize key words, and to be patient as they look for signs their friend has understood their message.</li>
<li>Assign language buddies:  Establishing a buddy system guarantees that every child will have a ready-made friend to start with.  Depending on who is available and what are the language levels and needs of each child, think of different ways to pair children.  You might ask a more experienced bilingual child to partner with a newcomer, or pair a nurturing English-speaker with a child who is just learning the language.  This benefits the newcomer for sure – but think about how terrific it is for the other buddy to be entrusted with such important responsibility!</li>
<li>Prepare adults to foster multilingual friendships:  Sometimes programs or playgroups may have one adult who speaks the other language of the children.  That’s a wonderful thing – but even better if that adult is prepared to include other friends in the play, stories and games.  Every monolingual English child should have the experience of participating in play that is conducted in a language they hardly know.</li>
<li>Try using sign language:  Using American Sign Language (ASL) in the U.S., and other versions in their respective locations, is a fantastic addition to any preschool child’s life.  Many of the signs used by young children really do look like the concept, so they are easy to remember and use.  For example, the sign for ‘drink’ is to hold the hand as if gripping a cup and putting it to the lips.  As long as we depend on using gestures to augment our communication – why not use standard signs as gestures?  Then all the children will be learning the same gestures to clarify communication even if the group has many different languages.  I’ve seen children rush to teach signs to newcomers so they can get to know each other right away.</li>
</ul>
<p>I know there’s a lot of talk among advocates and experts about how important it is for American children to learn to communicate with people from different language and cultural background to support our country’s ability to compete in the global marketplace.  Right now, I am most interested in helping young children develop confidence, self-esteem, and the joy of being able to make new friends!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mackenzie Carpenter of the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a> writes a thought provoking article entitled, <a href="http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09340/1018799-51.stm">&#8220;Clashing Data Bombards New Parents As Old-School Ideas Fall By The Wayside.</a>&#8221;</p>
<p>Giving readers food for thought, Carpenter talks about parents over-reliance on parent advice. She cleverly points out how advice and parenting gurus change from generation to generation, leading us to wonder at the validity of any of it.</p>
<p>While I could be buying into yet another trend, I do feel that raising your children to be emotionally intelligent by using principles of emotional coaching, empathy and mirroring really makes sense. This approach individualizes parenting and puts the power back where it belongs &#8211; the parent-child relationship.</p>
<p>In my opinion, no one parenting book or one parenting guru can be useful unless it recognizes this individualistic approach. When we, as parents, feel in charge of our parenting it does much to reduce the anxiety of feeling like we are always falling short. Reading many conflicting books on parenting will raise this anxiety, sometimes to a feverish pitch.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not suggesting that we should feel like we are always right! Parenting is a dynamic relationship in which we learn. We have to make mistakes because we are human. Let&#8217;s learn from these.</p>

<p>In this wonderful blog post entitled &#8220;<a href="http://theparentingpractice.blogspot.com/2009/11/permission-to-feel.html">Permission to Feel</a>,&#8221; Coach Nancy points out that parents sometimes curb positive emotions like excitement as well as the more painful ones. All humans have feelings, she says, and by not allowing them to be felt we become unable to process them in healthy ways.</p>
<p>Children who are comfortable with all their feelings understand themselves better and have higher emotional intelligence. Knowing where they come from gives children direction and the ability to plot a path towards where they want to be.</p>
<p>Coach Nancy discusses some of the factors that hinder a parent&#8217;s ability to focus on their child&#8217;s emotional development and suggests some areas for change.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-590" title="20091123---j0430778" src="http://www.mychildfeels.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/20091123-j0430778-300x201.jpg" alt="20091123---j0430778" width="300" height="201" />One of the more common questions and issues I deal with in my therapy practice is about childhood anxiety.</p>
<p>All of us have anxiety &#8211; it is an important emotion.</p>
<p>We need it to survive, stay safe and make good choices. Some of us are hardwired to be more anxious than others. As a therapist, I feel that more and more children are struggling with anxiety for many reasons and many parents struggle with how to help their kids cope. We want to make sure our children control their anxiety so it doesn&#8217;t control them. We don&#8217;t want their worries and fears to get in the way of enjoying and participating fully in their lives.</p>
<p>As parents it can be very difficult to help an anxious child. We often resort to reasoning with them and trying to use logic to talk them out of these irrational feelings. Unfortunately, this can just makes things worse. Once the brain is anxious for a certain amount of time it begins to organizes itself around that and remain in fight or flight mode for longer periods. An anxious brain does not always respond very well to rationale  and the child often becomes more invested in convincing you how scary a situation really is. Children can also widen their repertoire of things to be frightened of, leaving parents baffled and swinging between feeling empathy and frustration.</p>
<p>Children don&#8217;t always show the typical or obvious signs of anxiety that we might think of. Sometimes demanding behaviour, extreme bossiness, temper tantrums and sleep disturbances can all be symptoms of worry or anxiety.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what to do:</p>
<ul>
<li>Talk to Your Child&#8217;s Doctor. If you feel your child&#8217;s anxiety is regularly getting in the way of them enjoying their life, if they constantly have trouble sleeping or complain often of stomach aches, nausea or headaches, contact your child&#8217;s pediatrician.</li>
<li>Fight or Flight Response. When a child is feeling anxious, their fight or flight instincts might kick in. This means their brain is not letting them think rationally, so when a parent tries to rationalize the situation, the child feels like they aren&#8217;t being listened to. Instead, ask lots of questions about how they are feeling, and put some urgency in your voice, without sounding anxious yourself. This will show you get that they are worried, and will help them get back to a place where they can hear the logical things you have to say.</li>
<li>Give it a Name. Don&#8217;t talk about your child being afraid, because this makes it seem like something that they can&#8217;t fix. Give it a name, like the &#8220;worry bug.&#8221; For older kids or teens, just refer to it as the &#8220;worry that gets in the way.&#8221; Then you can work together to come up with ways to reduce it. This helps kids to control their emotions.</li>
<li>Get Connected. Spend more cuddle time with young children and spend more alone time with teenagers. Children feel safe and more secure when they feel deeply loved.</li>
<li>Set Limits.  Kids are exposed to a lot of adults themes &#8211; and they are not socially or emotionally prepared to deal with these. Set limits on behaviour and the things you kids are exposed to. When kids see that parents don&#8217;t have control, they get nervous about who will take care of them and this aggravates anxiety. Turn off scary news reports on TV or hide frightening headlines.</li>
<li>Scaling. Get your kids to rate their anxiety and use deep breathing or positive imagery to bring the number down.</li>
<li>Calm Yourself. Sometimes children come by their anxiety honestly. Use the same techniques to make sure you are calm. Kids often gauge their responses based on ours.</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-576" title="j0396176" src="http://www.mychildfeels.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/j0396176-300x199.jpg" alt="j0396176" width="300" height="199" />Understanding respect and boundaries is crucial to parenting. What does this mean? When I was growing up, respect meant one thing only &#8211; how we spoke to and behaved towards our elders. Today, I have a very different understanding of these words.</p>
<p>I use the two together because they are bound. Respecting others necessitates understanding of their boundaries. As parents, in our efforts to raise our children, it sometimes feels easier to be prescriptive rather than fine-tuning our approach to their individual needs. Who has the time?! While the time often seems impossible to find, I believe that the short-term effort would mean very long-term gains.</p>
<p>Every child, like every adult, has a different set of boundaries. Even from very young ages, some may enjoy lots of cuddling while others can barely sit on our laps for more than a few seconds. Some kids naturally communicate about everything while others show more reticence. When we understand and respect the individual personalities and boundaries of our children, we are essentially telling them that we accept who they are.</p>
<p>Only from a position of acceptance can children truly grow. Children who are told to be something that they don&#8217;t feel at that moment is possible for them, become defensive and cling to the selves that they fear they are in danger of losing. Secure kids are kids who will extend themselves and take risks regardless of their starting position.</p>
<p>How do we as parents change the way we act and more importantly, feel? I think if parents accept that by respecting the boundaries of our children, we will raise them to be the best that they can be, change will feel easier. This becomes more challenging as our children grow older but the truth is that the more challenging it feels, the more important it will be!</p>
<p>I believe that prescriptive parenting serves us and not our kids. We often have to stand by and watch our child &#8220;fail&#8221; at something because we believe that there is a lesson that they need to learn. For this reason, I like to think of &#8220;failure&#8221; as showing our children enough respect that we have faith in their ultimate choices.</p>
<p>Believe me, as a mother of four I understand how difficult this is and sometimes not possible at all! No one said parenting was easy. Often it feels very counter-intuitive as we consciously put our protective selves aside, knowing that this will be the best for our children. I am a parent and I struggle with this daily.</p>
<p>Sharing our experiences as parents, our triumphs and our setbacks can be so helpful. I would love to hear what you think about this.</p>

I am hoping this website might help me respond to these outbursts. She also has difficulty handling conflict with her peers. Her father (who doesn't live with her) doesn't think these are things to worry about but I do.

<p>Thanks for your question. You may be on the right track with your daughter. Gifted children have many of the characteristics you are describing. Giving up quickly, melting down when they can’t master something right away, anxiety, struggles with peers, even tactile or taste issues. They can also be very dramatic and get incredibly upset, crying and sobbing, claiming that life is awful and can be very difficult to soothe at times. Gifted children have big emotions. I call them tidal wave emotions because they can have a hard time regulating.</p>
<p>Think of it this way: the left brain which understands patterns and sequences is logical, mathematical and reasonable. In gifted children, it also understands too much. The right side of the brain, whose job it is to regulate emotion, can’t cope with it all. These kids tend to be worriers, stressing out about things before they even happen. At six years old, they could be lying in bed worrying whether they will have a good job when they grow up and get really worked up about it.</p>
<p>They become overwhelmed by these emotions and begin to feel that their emotions control them and not the other way around. They often have trouble sleeping and self soothing. Learning a new task like bike riding can be a nightmare because they expect to be able to do it right away and when they can’t they fall apart screaming, “This is stupid&#8230; it’s impossible! And I have the worst life.” It is challenging to parent a child like this and very difficult to help them learn to calm themselves and organize these feelings. It is however very important that they learn to master this ability and develop resilience.</p>
<p>If your daughter is in the regular school system, they do test children for gifted-ness in grade three. If you are in a private school, you may consider having your child tested privately. This will help you understand your daughter and help with school placement but you will still need to help her develop the skills to cope with what life throws at her.</p>
<p>It can be incredibly frustrating to parent such a reactive child. The parenting bond, as much as you love her, can get frayed by this behaviour and can cause us as parents to withdraw, become frustrated or try to constantly talk these kids out of their feelings. Then, this adds to their anxiety and emotional disorganization. Try really listening to her feelings and try to understand her before you correct her even if those feelings seem unreasonable. Spend extra time cuddling and connecting with her this will also help.</p>
<p>For additional help, in my book &#8220;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Connected-Parenting-Transform-Challenging-Loving/dp/1583333444/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1236975630&amp;sr=1-1">Connected Parenting</a><em>&#8221; </em>I discuss gifted children and how to use a technique called the <em>CALM technique</em> to help parents listen effectively, build resilience and protect and strengthen the parent/ child bond.</p>
<p>If she continues to have difficulty, talk to your paediatrician. She may benefit from a few sessions of Cognitive Behavioural therapy to help give her a sense of control over her emotions. Once she has some sense of control over her feelings the best side of her will emerge. She will be happier, more flexible and you will be able to enjoy your relationship with her so much more.</p>

They seemed to get everything just right. Their children were always immaculate, clean and well-behaved. They slept when they were supposed to and ate what was good for them. These same parents found the time to teach their barely toddlers to recognize their abc&#8217;s and still find space in a day to work out!</p>

<p>I crawled through those early years, happy to make it to the end of each day without a major calamity or concern.</p></div>

<p>I noticed however, with great interest, that these same parents seemed a bit thrown when their children reached eight or nine. Those fun years when kids realize for the first time that you, their wonderful parents, don&#8217;t know absolutely everything there is to know on this earth. They learn that their mouths move and they&#8217;re not afraid to use them. These parents now go into full gear and ground their kids at the drop of a hat and manage, through these and other punitive techniques, to keep their children, yet again, on the straight and narrow for another few years.</p></div>
<div>
<p>Then, TEENAGERS! I&#8217;ve come to realize that these years define parents way more than they define children. Parents of teenagers who&#8217;ve never doubted their parenting skills could run into serious trouble here. Children of this age want to explore their own wants and desires. They want to experiment with limits and they definitely don&#8217;t want you telling them what to do. Parents of teenagers have to become expert diplomats. They have to learn to parent with backbone and understanding in the same sitting.</p></div>

<p>Parents with control issues do not do well parenting this age group. They take rebellion and withdrawal as a personal attack and lose sight of the true role of parent. They are so hung up on getting their children to listen that they forget to look for emotional and social cues. I&#8217;m not saying that parenting teenagers is easy. It&#8217;s not. But it doesn&#8217;t have to spiral into an endless existence of negativity.</p></div>
<div>
<p>This is the greatest period of adjustment for parents. It is almost, symbolically speaking, the real cutting of the cord. Parents unable to do this will start to do one of two things. They will start to blame their child (for somehow being innately bad) or they will start to blame others &#8211; wrong friends, wrong school, wrong area etc. Sadly, many &#8220;perfect&#8221; parents do not look at themselves.</p></div>

<p>“Hi Rickie, it’s <a href="http://www.mychildfeels.com/author/marshajacobson/">Marsha Jacobson</a>. I was wondering if you would join <a href="http://www.mychildfeels.com">mychildfeels.com</a> as a contributor. We are looking for a perspective from a grandparent and I know you would be great.    I still remember advice you gave me years ago.”</p>
<p>“Yes,” I replied. “I would love to share my thoughts, but what is blogging? And why can’t we just sit and have a cup of coffee and chat?”</p>
<p>After Marsha explained it all to me, I now understand what blogging is and feel excited at the prospect of sharing my ideas.  They have been seasoned along the way by a 38 year old marriage to my childhood sweetheart, being a mother of my two (now) adult children and their mates and a grandmother to my boys.</p>
<p>My job as a preschool principal for 25 years has fine tuned my perspective and allowed me to see the world through thousands of eyes.  My parents, siblings and their family’s life experiences have provided me with the platform to work towards my doctorate in life.</p>
<p>So, get a large lasagna dish, fill it with eggs and then gently, very gently walk on the eggs… but don’t break them.  Welcome to the world of grand parenting.</p>
<p>I love being a grandmother. But, in order to ride this trolley, there are rules that must be followed. Three great rules I try to work by are: Stop, Look and Listen.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 90px;">Stop: Give no advice.<br />
Look: Observe your grandkids being parented by their parents.<br />
Listen: Support the parents. As grandparents, we are cheerleaders not consultants.</p>
<p>As a grandparent, my goal is to sit on the sidelines and enjoy a new team playing a familiar game with updated equipment and new and improved rules.  This team has to find their own way and develop strategies that will result in winning outcomes. Insisting on my game plan could sabotage their future successes and interferes with the team building process, necessary for any championship team.</p>
<p>We know it “takes a village to raise a child,” but it takes the wisdom of the world to be a grandparent.</p>
<p>I look forward to reading your ideas, comments or questions.</p>

<p>There are so many wonderful things <span style="color: #ff6600;"> </span>about <a href="http://www.connectedparenting.ca/kolari-about.htm">Jennifer Kolari</a>&#8216;s book &#8220;<a href="http://www.connectedparenting.ca/kolari-overview.htm">Connected Parenting</a>&#8221; that I hardly know where to begin.</p>
<p>Kolari understands that even when parents feel despair, overwhelmed, angry or feel guilty because they no longer like their child, that these feelings are just a mask for fear and confusion. Kolari never blames parents who have lost their way and find themselves in a vortex of negativity. She understands, as a parent herself, how easily this can happen. Kolari&#8217;s book is about repairing and strengthening bonds between parent and child and between all relationships.  It is not about learning to love our child but learning how to love our child so that they feel lovable.</p>
<p>Of course, children and parents begin their journey in different places but all can benefit from learning the techniques outlined in &#8220;<a href="http://www.connectedparenting.ca/kolari-overview.htm">Connected Parenting</a>.&#8221; Kolari provides a wealth of information for general parenting as well as specific direction for parents of children with special needs. Kolari states that the Connected Parenting method is based on, &#8220;therapy techniques, not parenting techniques.&#8221; It&#8217;s important to know this because many times following her techniques feels like the opposite of what should be happening. A general rule of thumb for Kolari is that the times when we feel least like following her techniques are exactly the times when we should.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mirroring&#8221; is at the crux of Kolari&#8217;s method and is like empathy but much, much more. To mirror our child is to empathize in a way that makes them feel that we are listening and have truly understood their experience. We reflect this back to them and use their reactions as a guide for when we have done it right. Children who feel heard and understood also feel validated, safe and lovable. These children will also be more able to understand themselves and will feel more in control of their behavior and feelings. They will also find it easier to understand and accept boundaries.</p>
<p>Kolari refers to a child as feeling &#8220;lovable&#8221; as opposed to &#8220;loved.&#8221; This really speaks to her understanding of parents who have arrived at her doorstep not because they no longer love their child but because the parent-child relationship has &#8220;frayed&#8221; and the experience of love is lost behind the cloud of anxiety, anger and despair. The Connected Parenting method helps us find that love again.</p>
<p>Kolari has some wonderful analogies throughout her book that really help parents understand what she is saying. She says that children need to feel connected to their parents to feel loved and safe so that they can explore their world in a healthy way. We must be careful, however, to not smother our child nor give them too much slack. She uses rock climbing to explain this concept. &#8220;When you rock climb, you often have a partner on the ground who is wearing a harness with a rope. &#8230; The rope literally connects the climber to his or her partner on the ground, who, in effect, gives him enough slack to move upward. And because the climber trusts the partner and feels the safety of the tension on the rope, he will have the confidence to reach farther and climb higher because he knows he can&#8217;t fall. The tension needs to be just right &#8211; too much and the climber can&#8217;t move, too little and he can&#8217;t feel the tension.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kolari exudes &#8220;realness&#8221; both as a person and as a parent. She shares many personal stories about her own imperfect parenting but strongly believes that, &#8220;In the game of life you always get a second chance.&#8221; She encourages parents to revisit situations that they may have handled incorrectly and rewrite them. She teaches parents that there is no room in the journey of parenting for defensiveness and power struggles. She shows us in clear and often touching ways that loving your child in ways that they feel lovable is empowering to both child and parent.</p>
<p>I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the quality of the relationship with their child.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The experience of ourselves, others and the world is not bestowed upon us, but created by us. The objectivity of events is an illusion, an organizing force born out of our creative minds but attributed to our rational brains. We know what we think and therefore think that we know. Personal perception, however, is anything but the impartial and unbiased entity that we love to imagine it is. Though our insight or intellect may inform our perceptions, they are ultimately guided by an endless array of variables such as biology, personality, upbringing and circumstance. They are moulded by the people we meet, the books we read and the types of people we strive to be.</p>
<p>No one, of course, is wholly guided by perception. Our rational minds are constantly evaluating and revising our perceptions in an effort to more closely approximate the “real” – the true meaning of an utterance, gesture or incident. Often, to be sure, our perceptions are dead on, such as when the intent of an ambiguous gesture is accurately discerned (e.g. a friendly hug is recognized for what it is and not misconstrued as romantic). Other times, contrarily, our perceptions lead us astray, obscuring the reality of a situation with a host of ideas that can result in needless negative emotional experiences (or, sometimes, risky positive ones).</p>
<p>These are hardly new concepts, and they are taken into account by the majority of people at least to some extent in their daily lives. We recognize, for instance, that motivations are often hidden and that we must use the information available to us in order to form as accurate a perception as possible. What we often fail to take into account, however, is that perception in interpersonal interaction is a dynamic process that involves a thinking, interpreting and evaluating mind other than our own. In other words, when we attempt to get at the “true” meaning of another individual’s actions, we may forget that that person’s actions are themselves based on interpretation. Thus, where we seek truth we find only more subjective perception.</p>
<p>Taking a fresh perspective, as is often preached through the adage “walking in someone else’s shoes”, is in my opinion one of the most important steps towards empathizing with and understanding others. By recognizing that our ways of interpreting the world are complimented by infinite variations, we can begin to understand true motivation; that is, the motivation behind motivation. The reasons why some react with anger when we would have reacted with kindness, or how someone’s opinion can be so drastically different from our own, for instance, become more available as we realize that the same forces acting upon our perspectives are acting upon others in varying degrees and combinations.</p>
<p>Asking the question “what might I have done in a situation” will provide some important insight into others’ behaviour and help you to understand their motivations. It is equally important, however, to wonder how others’ unique perspectives lay the foundations for the way they feel, think and act.  Teaching children (and recognizing ourselves) that others respond to their own perspectives, no matter how off track they appear to be, with the same conviction that we respond to ours, will undoubtedly help to foster social intelligence, self-awareness and empathy.</p>
